When buying from a specialty retailer, ask when the beans were roasted. Coffee is at its best within a few days of roasting. When buying bulk whole beans, ask how long the beans have been sitting in bins. Contrary to common advice, storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer is not a great idea.
