    Equipment Discovery

I came back from work to hear that my wife had found a coffeeshop in Belgrade (a suburb of Bozeman about 10 miles away) that was going out of business and selling everything. The tables are all gone but the display cases, refrigerator, cash register, espresso machine, cabinets and undercabinet refrigerator are all still there! We are heading there directly after I get off work today at 5;00 pm.

Jenni is also heading over to the space this morning to do some exact measurements and plotting it on graph paper so we can get the layout of the space down and head to the restaurant supply store in order to figure out how much space we need for the 'kitchen."

We also got a lot of information back from the building inspection department yesterday. They told us that to figure out max capacity (which will be important as this will directly affect our bottom line) you take the total serving square footage and divide it by 15. Ours happens to be around 63 people. Since this number is above 50, we are required to have 2 bathrooms. We also need 16 parking spaces base on our size.

I will keep things updated on this equipment we found..

Jason, please be sure to update us on how the equipment shopping went. Did you or will you buy any of the equipment?

Finding quality used equipment when starting out is a smart move. Let me give you an example:

Last week I visited a startup business in my area -- a daylily farm. The husband and wife team did a beautiful job setting it up, with raised beds outlined by barn stone and sand stone, and beautiful bricked walkways. I asked where they got all the beautiful stone and brick, and learned they had bought it inexpensively at auctions -- of all places. They had attended auctions for 3 years -- often travelling several states away. They bought truckloads of the stuff and stored it on their property until they could start building all the hardscape. They said they would never have been able to afford such stone and brick otherwise. Incredible planning!

    Jason,

Were you able to find out why the coffee shop in Belgrade was going under? Might serve as good intel on what pitfalls to watch out for. Not to mention good info in general to those of use who study entrepreneurship.

    Hi Darrin,

Thanks for reading this blog and for shedding some insight! I actually did not ask at the time of the first meeting. All I do know is that their lease was up and they did no renew. I do believe that they were in a tough location with not much foot traffic (it was at the far corner of a shopping strip mall off the mail road). I am supposed to get with him tomorrow, although from the way it's looking it will be Thursday, and I hope to talk with him a bit more about the business.

I believe he is looking to get into roasting and also catering as his wife is a baker. I will keep you updated! Thanks again for reading!
