Cafe Evoke meets Starbucks
| As it turns out, the delay on signing the lease seems to have nothing to do with our menu "change" but rather a call from Starbucks who is now interested, again, in the space two doors down from the one we have been diligently working on. At this point, it looks like back to the drawing board for Cafe Evoke and into business for Starbucks. I can relate, now, all the small business out there who get bullied around by the big guys. How would this change our future relationship with these owners if they really seem to care nothing about us? Looking on the bright side, I guess now I can join the challenge for Fair Trade coffee in Starbucks locations worldwide. It is important to note here that I understand that our little mermaid friends really have nothing to do with our ability to gain control -- and keys -- to this space and I understand that if it was not for the chain coffee in this country would be even more greatly underserved, I still would appreciate some respect from business people who really know nothing about the green giants. They are not always right you know! We have already begun looking for other spaces and are hoping to meet with some other building owners when we return from our "relaxing" trip to Nashville. I have requested that the owners of the space return to us both signed copies of the lease and our deposit check and we will go from there. This is not a done deal yet and we could still move in. I am just not sure if I really want to deal with these people anymore. I am not sure how many times we have to keep getting up but for now, we are back on our feet -- sort of -- and moving on. Yes we have lost money (quite a bit at this point) that we will not be able to recover, but I think we are still in good shape. We will keep you updated. |

post a commentOMG -- This SOOO sucks! You seem to be keeping your chin up, but this story really, really disturbs me. You're kinder than I, cuz I'd be cursing Starbucks right now if I were in your situation.
In any case, best of luck. I may be linking here to follow up on your story from time to time, in conjunction with the Starburcks Challenge. Hope things get easier for Evoke soon --
Wow - I really thought a few posts ago that you had the space for sure. Good luck with this battle.
Anohter point - the way you write you wife's name - Jenni - it is a very Finnish way of writing it.
Jason,
Keep your eye on your vision.

I just came across your site. Sorry to hear about what's happening. I might be a little behind on the news, but what sort of local support do you have, or more importantly is there support for or against the Starbucks coming to town? There's a older unique community here in San Diego that got hit with a Starbucks a few years back, but no one in the community wanted them there because it took away from the character of the community. I'm pretty sure it went to a council vote or something. Granted, the Starbucks still moved in, but I think their business suffered greatly. If you could rally an anti-Starbucks movement it might persuade them to find a new location. Then again, it might be easier to just find a new location like it sounds like you're doing, and you could probably outdo the Starbucks anyway...
That's some terrible luck. I hope things get better for you in the future with finding a place.
Keep up the great work!
