    Marketing Plan

I found the follow post tonight at Church of the Customer:

Word of mouth data by BNET's -- Almost half of all online marketers will engage in some form of word of mouth marketing this year. Next year, a majority of digital marketers will conduct such efforts

This post talks about a study by the Word Of Mouth Marketing Association and eMarketer and defines the top ten reason word of mouth marketing is gaining its position on many small business marketing plans.

What makes this study interesting to me is that Cafe Evoke will employ many word of mouth campaigns to get our name out there. It is free and it is something that gets around very quickly. It is a very interesting post. Go have a look.

Hi Jason, I'm new to your blog. I just happened to stumble on your blog because of links from other blogs (I can't remember which one exactly), but here I am. I want to salute you and your wife for the tremendous efforts, motivation, energy and time to make your dream come true: Cafe Evoke. I support your concepts; fair trade, arts, homey and friendly environment because also those are concepts if I'd open a Cafe.

Actually, about the same time a year go that I moved with my husband to South of France from San Francisco. I'm Indonesian who had lived in SF for 8yrs and my husband is french. I wanted to start my own business which I've always dreamt about opening a neighborhood Cafe like yours. I, like you, have been thinking and thinking about details of things month after month, but before I got real focused into the details of 3yr-provisional, I had to learn the hard way that we can't afford it. Plus with me working on my own as the plan, would be too challenging unless the surface I'd over is pretty small.

In france, all together it's a different system. For example: in order to get a rental space, you need to buy the Rights to rent, which can cost 85.000-more than 100.000 euros. That you need to have in advance. Plus monthly rental and all the start-up costs, you can imagine how high it can be. In France also, not all available spaces can be a cafe, resto, pub or sandwich stand...anything that will produce noises, odors, cooking, garbage etc., therefore these spaces are limited (therefore expensive and competitive) plus you need to have a lisence to serve even non-alcohol beverages (lisence 1-4, last one to be hard liquor etc). Lisence 4 is the most expensive and they're limited in number too. There are no new lisences being given, just when a business closes down the lisence is back on sale. Anyways, those are some of challenges..at the end we can't afford it right now. Plus without any experience in this cafe business doesn't make it easier. The idea will still be in my head and heart though until one day hopefully.

With all those said, I admire your perseverance, persistance and motivation. I wish you a huge amount of Good Luck because I think sooner than later your dream will come true even with those glitches along the way. I'm amazed with your blog too..the details of contents..your generosity in sharing the step by step processes even your personal thoughts and feelings about all. I thank for sharing. I will keep reading your blog and see your progression..from France. I can see my self in your position..I'd like to see you succeed. Btw, I got a chance to read your blog from the beginning for the past week :-) You get all my support.

Back to my side of the story, my husband and I decided to open shop of Indonesian Arts, Crafts, Coffee and Teas, plus Fair Trade coffees and teas from other countries in packages. Here in France the lisencing body is called Max Havelaar with similar logo than in the U.S. I myself also started a blog recently for this switch and wrote what I had to go through up to this point...(if you care to read it). I'm excited because we'll be signing the agreement to buy/sell "Compromis de Vente" on Monday. I found my shop..hopefully it'll go smoothly from here..I'm targeting to open for x-mas and new year to catch the busy season before it goes down in Jan.-March...

Best of luck for both of you,
    -Maya.

    Maya,

Thank you for reading A Thought Over Coffee! I am glad to hear that you are enjoying it -- all the way from France.

My wife and I are very excited to get opened and I hope this blog helps others fuel their dreams. Please let me know if I can help you with any advice (not that I am an expert or anything).

Thank you again and good luck with your business! It sounds great.
