| I think many of the reasons why people do not understand the importance of Fairly Trade goods is because they are unaware. What does it all mean? How do you know what is and is not certified Fair Trade? I think this problem is similiar to what the music industry is facing with listeners burning music without paying for it. Lack of knowlegde can account for most of the reasons behind it. Green LA Girl offers this nice piece about the different logos dealing with Fair Trade and what they mean. (on a side, I sorta like the US logo myself -- although I see the reason for liking the UK and Australia version) ..be bold |

post a commentI agree. Though the various Fair Trade organizations are very good at what they do (making fairly traded goods availible to consumers) They need some better publicity. Maybe they could work some kind of Fair Trade deal to employ marketers and advertisers from impoverished nations to work for a fair wage to promte fairly traded goods.

Great point and thanks for bringing up Equal Exchange. I think the more consumers know about Fair Trade goods, the more it will catch on.
There are many great sites, including the one you mention, that we should all have bookmarked. Be looking for a post in the nexts few days about the different sites that are available on the net.

What's interesting is that a lot of coffee companies complain that TransFair USA -- the FT org for the US -- does marketing TOO well while not focusing on more of the nitty gritty education stuff.
Usually, this complaint comes from companies not doing much fair trade. They want people to know that there are people growing coffee who aren't able to get certified because of this restriction or that.
Of course, both the companies that care about a more equitable society AND the companies just making the probs worse use the same arguments in that end. Which just further confuses the issue for the customers.
Being on the consumer end, I too wish there was more marketing done so that the majority of the population's at least are aware what the logo means. Then we can have a more involved debate about the smaller issues --
