Recycling in Bozeman, Montana

I have been thinking about this for the past several months, actually, but have not come to any final ideas. When I first started working at my current job as a customer service rep for a local online retail (you know, local offices --- not local market) store, we had boxes under our desks for paper recycling. I filled mine up the first time and went to ask what I should do with it and was told that the service that did the rest of our recycling -- only aluminum cans -- no longer took paper.

I then did some research and found that Bozeman has a Pay A$ You Throw Program in which:
It took residents time to get used to the new program and the need to stop at City Hall to purchase tags. Some unhappy residents chose to change their garbage service to a private hauler because of the inconvenience. Over time, residents became more familiar with the program and were less frustrated.

Now Bozeman offers residents automated garbage service utilizing multi-sized totes. This makes it more convenient for residents to participate in the City's program. Residents choose either a 35, 65, or 100 gallon sized tote to fit their disposal needs and recycling habits. Bozeman continues to offer the tag/bag system and still sells some tags every year but the automated garbage collection program is more popular.

Residents paying for the 35-gallon tote choose between pick up once per week or pickup just once per month with fees scaled accordingly. Households choosing once per month pickup use a different colored lid on their tote, which is set out the first week of every month. The City does not offer once per month pick up for the 65 and 100-gallon totes.
I just found out about this but it still did not help the situation for paper recycling. I do think it is good that the City of Bozeman is trying to do something to help. I like the idea of tag and bag but I agree that it is difficult to decide how many to buy. They also do a very poor job in telling customers and residence about this option as I have even talked to them about trash options and recycling bins before always being told that no bins are available.

Bozeman's Department of Environmental Quality has a nice website with some resources that are probably fairly helpful but nothing -- that I can find -- about recycling.

What can we do with all the paper we use at this office? I do my best to forward information electronical as to not waste so much paper but I would love to be able to recycle what we do have to print as it just gets thrown in the trash. There are many recycling drop offs around town -- including one my my house that we frequent often -- but we can only leave glass, plastic bottles, aluminum, newspapers/magazines, and cardboard. We take the plastic grocery sacks, when we use them, to the store and put them in the container marked for them but with paper, we are hopeless.

How can I recycle paper in Bozeman, Montana? Are there any companies that provide bins and a weekle/monthly pick up scheduled at my curb? Have any suggestions?

Let me know!

Wish I could help, but I just don't know :( My sis is having similar issues in St. Louis, where there's pretty much NO initiative to recycle. In Cali, collecting cans and stuff actually can mean good money -- which is why we have many transients digging through people's trash. But not so in St. Louis, where there's no refund for turning in bottles and cans... Apparantly, there is a place where people can take aluminum cans for recycling. It's a totally open, unguarded, unmanned place -- and no one filches the cans as they would in LA ...

I just hope that a company will move in here that will offer a recycling pick up program in which I can have bins out on the curb for this once a week. That is all we want here!

Most of the recycling drop-offs in town have a bin for office paper. Some of them also say "newspaper" on them. But I agree, curbside would be wonderful. But then, is it cheaper to take your office paper and drop it off once a week, or pay extra bucks for your garbage pickup!

Thanks Richard,

I was not aware that there was paper recycling located on those drop-offs. I did see the newspaper one but thought they were fairly strict on the type of paper that went in there.

I will check it out. Thanks for pointing that out for me.
