    Black Gold on PBS

A friend of mine reminded me yesterday that Black Gold will be airing on PBS Tuesday, April 10th. You can check your local listings to be sure of the time it will be airing in your area. It looks like AZ and MT get to see it on the same day at the same time so it may be by region. Below is a trailer for the film in case you have been curious.

Please go to their website (above) and get involved with this film. If it has not been to your area, contact the film and any local film society and get them hooked up.

It is great to see things coming together with Black Gold.

"Get involved"? This is a public relations piece about Fair Trade that glosses over all the internal problems of Fair Trade certification.

Please watch, but please do so with a skeptic's eye. There are too many facets of this issue to employ simplistic platitudes like, "always buy Fair Trade coffee".

Thanks for your comment, swag. I think if you read my blog you would learn that I agree with you that our Fair Trade Certification system is not a perfect process - that there are holes and issues that need to be addressed as we go forward.

I think you would also find that I believe in what the process is supposed to do but understand that it does not go quite according to plan in many cases.

It is what we have. It is a start at best.

There is a long way to go to really make this something that practices what it preaches.

My goal is awareness. If more people can understand that Fair Trade is not just a trend or a fad, we may have a chance to really get inside some of those "internal problems" that you write of.

    Thanks for commenting..

For those of you who are interested in the issue of Fair trade, there is a powerful documentary out called “Black Gold,” that documents the lives of Ethiopian coffee farmers and clearly demonstrates why all of us should be asking for Fair Trade coffee. The film was recently released in the theater but is now available to the public on DVD via California Newsreel. You can read more about the documentary or pick up a copy of it here at http://newsreel.org/
