Meeting Recap | Future Farm

Yesterday I met with Ryan of Future Farm. My first impression was probably not the best. For one, I was about 5 minutes late (which is very late for me) which put me feeling a bit out of sorts. Their building is fantastic. It is the old Gallatin Valley Seed Building on South Wallace in Bozeman and has more character than I have seen in any building in a long time. I actually enjoyed walking the old halls on the second floor past the music lesion studios and other unique businesses.

I knocked on the door a few minutes late to this meeting and the two guys inside looked at me with a look of wonderment on their faces. I said that we were supposed to meet today and he said “oh, ok.” He did not have the meeting on his schedule but after reading his email when I got home, at least I had the correct day and time.

Despite the crazy introductions, the meeting went well. Future Farm does some very cool, modern, edgy and unique sites. They are a flash design firm so I was not sure how things would go. Normally, full flash sites get a bit obnoxious but I really liked the feel and layout of most of their projects.

As a business goes, these guys seem to fit in with Café Evoke Catering and hopefully the future Café Evoke art and coffee house. I am waiting for a quote which “should” happen by the end of next week.

The things I like:
  • Artistic design
  • Color
  • Flash forms
  • Shopping Cart (for the future)
  • HTML Indexing behind Flash

    My Concerns:
  • Content Management (we will have to have them update our site)
  • Blog compatibility with Flash

Future Farm makes some really cool stuff. The usual problem I find with flash sites is the classic “all show and no go” problem… Flashy but not really functional. From the looks of things, they’ve addressed this well. Their example sites are intriguing. I’ll be interesting to see what you come up with. Do you plan to keep the same theme as the Café Evoke site?

The new CafeEvoke.com will be a bit cleaner than it is now. We may use the "top/bottom" approach a bit like is it now but at this point, I think we are looking for a fresh approach.

The blog will also - hopefully - fit in as well. If not, expect a total redesign for the current skin to mimic CafeEvoke.com

Jason, one more thing you might want to inquire about is search engine optimization. I know sites with heavy flash use may have more obstacles to overcome, but it might not be so bad if you're not using a lot of flash. Just something to keep in mind.

    Hey Tomas,

I know exactly what you mean. That is what I am always afraid of with Flash sites. I talked with them about it and they actually will do a masked HTML site that will be "under" the flash allowing search engines to crawl the site and allow people to bookmark certain pages on the site - both of which you normally can't do if you are using full Flash.

SEO content is still important for this so we will be working hard to be sure that we can get a page 1 result for coffee catering, etc.
